Japanese government scholarship for a full bachelor’s degree at an overseas university, generally for four years. The monthly stipend ranged from JPY 139,000 to JPY 352,000 depending on destination (2026 figures), plus a one-off JPY 10,000 travel grant.

Who can apply

Japanese citizens or permanent residents living in Japan who are finishing high school, with a high school GPA of at least 3.7 out of 5, household income of JPY 20 million or less, and English or other language proficiency (for example IELTS 6.0).

Deadline

Next deadline not announced yet. For the FY2027 round, prefectural recommendation documents were due on 1 October 2026, with student deadlines set by each prefecture. Dates for the next round have not been published.
