Japanese government scholarship for full master’s (up to 2 years) or doctoral (up to 3 years) degrees at overseas universities. The monthly stipend ranged from JPY 177,000 to JPY 388,000 depending on destination (2026 figures), plus a one-off JPY 10,000 travel grant; 175 people were selected in FY2026.

Who can apply

Japanese citizens or permanent residents of Japan (including special permanent residents), under 35 for master’s or under 40 for doctoral study as of 1 April of the start year. Most applicants apply through a Japanese university.

Deadline

Next deadline not announced yet. The 2027 round (support starting April 2027 to March 2028) closed on 8 October 2026. JASSO says guidelines are usually published around September and applications close in early October.
