Study abroad application timeline for 2027: what to do, month by month

A month-by-month study abroad application timeline for 2027 entry, with official UCAS, US, German and Dutch deadlines and when to apply for scholarships and visas.

Most study abroad plans are not lost on a bad essay. They are lost on a calendar. A scholarship closes before the university has even opened its application, a language test result arrives a week too late, or a visa appointment cannot be found.

The fix is to work backwards from the deadlines. This timeline is built around official 2027 entry dates published by UCAS, US universities, uni-assist and Dutch universities, checked on October 31, 2026. Use it as a frame, then add the exact dates of the programmes you choose.

The key official dates for 2027 entry

Note the UCAS date. For 2027 entry, the main deadline is 13 January, at 18:00 UK time. UCAS dates change from year to year, so do not rely on an older date.

18 to 12 months before you start

Decide where and what. Shortlist countries and courses. Compare total costs, including the money you must show for a visa (see proof of funds by country).

Find scholarships first. Some of the best-known scholarships close a year or more before your course starts. Chevening, for example, closed for 2027/28 study on 6 October 2026. Check our scholarship deadline calendar.

Book your English test. Leave time for a retake. Our guide to IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo explains the options.

Check your documents. Find out whether your degree needs evaluation in your destination country.

12 to 9 months before: applications open

  • UK undergraduate: UCAS opened for 2027 entry on 12 May 2026, and completed applications could be sent from 1 September 2026.
  • US: the Common App opened for the 2026 to 2027 season on 1 August 2026, with more than 1,200 colleges (Common App).
  • Ask for recommendation letters now. Give your referees time; see how to ask for a recommendation letter.

9 to 6 months before: the main deadlines

  • October: UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses (15 October 2026).
  • November: many US early action and early decision deadlines (1 November is common).
  • January: US regular decision deadlines and the main UCAS deadline (13 January 2027).
  • Graduate programmes in the UK, US and Europe often have deadlines between December and March. Check each programme.

6 to 3 months before: offers and decisions

  • Compare offers and funding carefully. Our guide on what to do after you get an offer explains conditional offers, deposits and the UK CAS.
  • US: most colleges cannot require you to confirm before 1 May, the National Candidates Reply Date. Binding early decision is the main exception.
  • UK: UCAS reply dates depend on when you hear back. For 2027 entry, if all decisions arrive by 31 March 2027, you must reply by 5 May 2027.
  • Netherlands: many bachelor’s deadlines fall on 1 May. Some universities set later visa and payment dates for non-EU students; Fontys, for example, asks for both by 15 June.

3 months before and less: visas and moving

  • Germany: uni-assist advises sending documents and paying at least eight weeks before the deadline, as checks usually take four to six weeks. With a 15 July deadline, that means mid-May.
  • UK visa: from outside the UK, you can apply up to six months before your course starts, once you have your CAS (GOV.UK). Remember the 28-day rule for your funds.
  • Book accommodation and flights, and arrange health insurance if your destination requires it.

The most common timing mistakes

  1. Starting with universities instead of scholarships. Scholarship deadlines often come first.
  2. Forgetting processing time. uni-assist, credential evaluations and visas all take weeks.
  3. Relying on last year’s dates. Deadlines move. Always check the dates for your year of entry.
