Sports scholarships in the UK for international students: which universities pay and how much
UK university sports scholarships open to international students: Loughborough, Stirling, Durham, Nottingham, Glasgow, St Andrews golf, Hartpury and more, with values and deadlines from official pages, plus how BUCS and TASS work.

British universities do sport differently from American colleges. Scholarships are usually smaller, but what many UK schemes offer is high-quality coaching and support alongside a respected degree, often in a one-year master’s or a three-year bachelor’s.
Several leading sporting universities offer scholarships that international students can apply for. We checked each one on its official page on October 31, 2026.
How UK university sport works
Most university competition runs through BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport), which covers 55 sports, 150 universities and over 6,000 teams (BUCS).
A UK sports scholarship is usually a mix of money and support: a tuition fee discount or bursary, plus coaching, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, gym access and academic flexibility around training and competition.
What about TASS? The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme supports athletes at the top of their sport’s talent pathway, but athletes are selected by their national governing body, not by applying (TASS). Criteria are set sport by sport, and some include residence rules. For example, Paddle UK’s criteria require residence in England or a family link to England. In practice, international students should look at university scholarships instead.

How to apply well
- Check your level. Most schemes ask for national, international or academy standard. Have your results and rankings ready.
- Apply for your course first, or at the same time. Most UK sports scholarships require an offer.
- Read what the money covers. Many awards are tuition discounts, and your fees and living costs will still be higher. See student visa proof of funds.
- Contact the sports department. Coaches and performance staff can tell you whether your sport and level fit.
